The People’s Republic of China is viewed through different lenses even today. Exotic. Mysterious. Aggressive. Fascinating. These are just some of the monikers that are pasted onto this 9.597 million square kilometres that make up the Land of the Dragon.

What is China today? How did “Made in China” become the most sighted marking on manufactured goods? Why has speaking and writing Chinese gained such significance? If the Chinese don’t master English, isn’t the obvious solution for English users to master Chinese and translate, translate, translate??!

What is China today?
China is a land surrounded by the Gobi desert in the North, thick, impenetrable forests in the South, the Himalayas on the West and the Pacific Ocean in the East. This is why early civilisation had limited interactions with this country. The politics of this country also added to its economic and cultural isolation. It was only in the 1970s that the winds of radical economic reforms swept through China’s vast landscape and ushered in a global trade economy. The Communist government in China has opened up not just the market but the free flow of trade and technology across its borders.

Add to these facts that China happens to weigh in with a population of 1,382,323,332 and growing every millisecond (yes, count it live by clicking on the link and you will see how fast the number changes!), and you will know the mind-boggling economy and market that is being considered.

Tongue tied in English
The emphasis on English education in China took off only in 1979 when the dragon established strong diplomatic ties with the American eagle. With estimates of English “speakers” as low as 10 million and English “learners” at 300 million, China has still a long way to go in free and easy communication considering that a sizeable chunk of the West uses English. So, is this mammoth, well connected market to remain incommunicado? Hardly!

“If the mountaine will not come to Mahomet, Mahomet will goe to the mountaine”

So said Sir Francis Bacon in his Essays, 1625.

Translation: If the Chinese don’t learn English, then English users will have to learn Chinese.

The official language of China and Taiwan is Mandarin or Standard Chinese. It is also one of the four official languages of Singapore.

Cantonese (a variety of Yue Chinese) is the official language of Hong Kong and Macau, the two mostly self governing special administrative regions of China.

The script uses characters called hanzi: there are more than 100,000 individual characters. Roughly speaking, each character represents a syllable and can be used individually or in combinations to form words. A recent development has divided this script to simplified Chinese which uses reduced and simpler characters; this is used mostly in Mainland China. The traditional version still continues in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau.

Pinyin, the official transliteration system using the Latin alphabet, has also been developed to ease pronunciation.

In addition, it should be noted that Mandarin Chinese is spoken by the well heeled Chinese communities of Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, the Philippines and Mongolia where the Dragon makes its presence pretty prominent and breathes a scorching breath.

Language translates to business
With China encouraging the free flow of business and becoming the golden land of opportunity, communicating in Chinese takes on varied shapes and colours if this high potential market has to be tapped deeper and deeper.
Professional Chinese translation has to be specific to the targeted area and the purpose which demands this service. Identifying and Dealing With Marital Problems

Two loving people enter into a marriage relationship because of a genuine love relationship. They have a goal of making each other happy as they promise each other to love and to cherish. That done, does not mean there will be a smooth road ahead. Let us hear what God says through the Apostle Paul about the solution to marriage conflict:

Eph 5:22 Wives, be in subjection unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

Eph 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, being himself the saviour of the body.

Eph 5:24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives also be to their husbands in everything.

Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself up for it;

Eph 5:26 that he might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word,

Eph 5:27 that he might present the church to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

Above is the solution to marriage conflicts. But before dealing with the above solution, let me highlight the following.

Marriage conflicts are inevitable

What do I mean by that? I mean that every active marriage relationship will have some conflicts, meaning differences of opinion or viewpoints. In a passive love relationship there is withdrawal by one marriage partner. It may be the husband or the wife. This is not a healthy relationship because it means that one partner is withholding or suppressing some feelings. This is dangerous because it is like a person who eats but does not go to the toilet to relieve himself. What do you expect to happen in that case? As a result marriages were not that happy ones. There were long- term resentments. Women especially, felt inferior and treated like children. But that was not God’s intention.

Many years ago the culture of some societies dictated that as much as a husband and wife wanted an amicable solution in a conflict, it was difficult most of the time. The easy way out was for man to make a decision and the wife would simply obey. This was mostly influenced by how decisions were made in other areas of life. Men dominated and controlled everything in society. However, in recent years there has been a significant change in many cultures due to the introduction of rights and equality in all areas of life including the marriage institution. That is why there is a lot of divorces and unwillingness to get married by some today. Each spouse has got his or her way of pursuing happiness in the marriage, which results in conflicts as happiness is no where to be found with such attitudes. If one does not find happiness his or her way, that partner opts to move out of the marriage in pursuit of happiness, independence and exercise of rights. This does not mean there should be no rights for each partner. They are important and should be respected.

Commitment to a common goal

Marriage conflicts can be solved amicably even though it is not that easy. Above we read a scripture, which is God’s prescription to marriage challenges. Let us acknowledge that as partners in a marriage relationship, we have different roles to play or functions and needs. As long as each partner plays his or her part conflicts will be minimized. Dominating each other as it was done by some long time ago did not bring a solution, but suppression. Too much emphasis on equality and rights this days has also not brought a solution but lots of divorces and single parenting thus resulting in weak foundations for children.

The roles and needs

1. Husband

A husband needs to be respected. It should not be difficult to respect a man even if you do not agree with him. A real man does not have a problem listening to your point of view as a woman. He also needs a woman who will allow him to lead in the family as mandated by God. So when resisted for a long time, he either withdraws, becomes violent or gets out of the marriage. His duty to the wife is to love and cherish her as Christ loves and gave Himself for His bride the Church.

2. Wife

A wife needs to be loved, cherished and understood. When ever she speaks, she does it out of her feelings. As a husband you need to get that if you want a lasting marriage. Love expresses itself by giving. Give love to your wife. Take care of her needs. When loved, a wife does not have a problem carrying out her duties or responsibilities. That is natural to her. She gives her all when loved. So your duty and responsibility as a wife is to respect and submit to your husband. If you do that, your husband will love, protect, feed, and take proper care of you. But if you hurt his ego, there will be trouble in the marriage and it will quickly manifest itself in your home. Most men have a problem with hiding how they feel.

Any good solution to a marriage conflict should result in the growth of the love relationship. There should be no unresolved issues in the marriage because such results in long- term resentment. That is not the right way to live. There must be a win/win solution and it is possible. A marriage relationship is not the same as politics where each party’s goal is to defeat the other. In politics there is never a promise to take good care and cherish each other as parties. However, in a marriage institution spouses were joined by love and good promises. There was a promise to take care of each other in both good and bad times. So there must be a common goal which unifies the marriage. There must be a will from each other to make the marriage work. As a couple, you are not competitors. You are differently made, you have different roles.

Willingness to understand each others perspective

Love for each other in the marriage relationship is key. That should drive each partner to be willing to understand the other’s viewpoint. A partner must be willing to listen. Each spouse should drop selfishness. Driven by love and desire to make each other happy will result in an amicable solution in any conflict. With positive motives you will find that differences just fall away. As a result a couple grows in loving each other. Once the key problem has been identified, it becomes easier to deal with the real problem. Dealing with symptoms of a problem does not resolve the conflict.

May I conclude by saying that a rewarding love relationship is possible. The love partners need to be both objective about an issue of conflict and be willing to solve it. You have different needs and roles as husband and wife. Let each stick to his or her God-given roles and what you need will automatically happen. The fact that there is a conflict, it shows that you are different. You see issues from different angles. Let us use those angles to clearly see an issue and then make a good decision. Do not compete because you are lovers not competitors.

Culture Shock, Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse

Mr. K. beat up his wife and caused her serious physical injuries.
Mr. L. beat his teen-age daughter and caused her serious physical injuries.
Mr. M. murdered his wife.
Mr. N raped a young woman he was dating.

None of these gentlemen was psychotic, a psychopath or of a particularly violent nature. So why did they commit such atrocious crimes?

There can be many causes for violence against women. In the cases of K., L., M, and N. The crimes were related to culture shock.

Culture shock is mental distress a person experiences in an unfamiliar cultural environment. Typically, culture shock occurs after immigration from a traditional rural society to a modern urban society, but it can appear also after processes such as urbanization, industrialization and other changes in which a person does no longer recognize the social and ecological environment he or she grew up in. In my research on cultural shock I use the term “loss of simplicity”. The world a person had known used to be experienced as simple, but after the change it became unbearably complex.

The notion of simplicity in this context includes the following sub-notions:

Completeness – My culture enables me to process all the information needed for smoothly functioning in my social and ecological environment.

Parsimony – My culture does not allow me to process information irrelevant to functioning in my environment

Consistency – My culture does not let me process information needed for proper functioning in ways that include self-contradictions.

Plausibility – My culture enables me to interpret and understand what is going on in my environment in what my culture considers plausible ways, in ways that are considered correct and make sense.

In situations of cultural shock at least some of these characteristics of simplicity get lost. This causes considerable mental stress. What people in a state of cultural shock tend to do is simplify the new cultural information they are exposed to, in order to make it more tolerable. Simplifying often involves forgoing one or more of the above listed aspects of simplicity for the sake of another aspect, e.g. forgoing completeness and plausibility for the sake of consistency. For example, if an immigrant does not get a job because he is not qualified according to the standards of the new country and because there is a high level of unemployment in the hosting country and because many candidates compete for the same job, he ignores all these facts (forgoes completeness) and consistently interprets the rejection as a manifestation of prejudice against people of his community (forgoing plausibility). It is easier for him, emotionally, to convince himself consistently that the reason is prejudice than to process all the complex information that would constitute a more valid explanation. Simplifying often includes interpreting the new cultural information through the lenses of one’s original cultural world view, for instance interpret talking with an older man in a friendly, informal tone as a shocking manifestation of disrespect.

Let us see how these concepts are related to the cases of K., L., M. and N. Each of these men had immigrated, with his family, from a traditional society in a rural, pre-industrialized area to a big modern city. Their original, pre-immigration culture was optimally simple with respect to the status of men vs. women. In the original cultures women were dominated by men. They had to obey their fathers and older brothers, and if married, their husbands and their husbands’ mother. They should be dressed modestly, covering their body and head when in public. Unmarried women were not allowed to go out of home unaccompanied by a chaperon. Married women were forbidden to go out of home unaccompanied by their husbands. Physical contacts between unmarried women and men were strictly forbidden. Marriages were arranged by parents. Young men or women were not allowed to choose their partners for marriage. Schools were gender segregated.. Married women were not allowed to work out of home or drive a car. Married women were expected to satisfy their husbands’ sexual needs. Refusing was a cause for divorce and a divorcee was sent back to her parents’ home. A divorced woman had a bad reputation. Being forced to have an intercourse by the husband was not considered an offence.

None of these rules was applicable in the dominant culture in the city to which these men and their families immigrated. The encounter with the new cultural environment involved loss of simplicity, loss of completeness and parsimony and therefore got these men into a state of cultural shock.

In the big city Mr. K, who had been a potter in the village he grew up in, had to work in a factory. His wife had to work out of home too, because his salary was not sufficient to provide for the family. She found a job in a store for women clothes, but had to wear modern attire. In Mr. K.’s mind this situation involved loss of completeness and parsimony because a wife working out of home and wearing modern clothes was unheard of in his native culture. Only prostitutes violated these rules. Although his rational mind understood why his wife had to behave in this way, emotionally he could not tolerate it. He lost consistency and plausibility, because on the one hand he accepted the need for his wife to work out of home, but on the other hand he could not accept it. And then his emotional state lead him to prefer implausibility for the sake of consistency. One evening, when his wife came back from work dressed in modern clothes he felt, implausibly, that she became a loose woman. Looking at her through the lenses of his native culture, he called her “prostitute” and beat her up.

Mr. L.’s teen-age daughter was influenced by her new cultural environment. She began rebelling against her father, refused to obey him, went out in the evenings with her friends, a mixed company of girls and boys, and dressed in modern clothes. Again, for L. this was loss of comprehensiveness and parsimony. He had to face facts concerning his daughter’s new values and behavior that were out of the question and irrelevant in his native culture. When he tried to force her to play by the rules of his native culture she called him “primitive” and refused to obey him. But at home she behaved like a dutiful traditional daughter.

She herself lost the consistency of her traditional culture. But her father lost consistency too. On the one hand he did not want to be considered “primitive” and attempted to be liberal and tolerant with his daughter. On the other hand he could not, emotionally, tolerate her “transgression”. So he too gave up his inconsistency and opted for behaving according to the parental rules of his native culture. One night, when she came back late from her evening out, he beat her up.

Mr. M.’s wife saw that married women in her new environment were not required to obey their husbands and their mothers. They were dressed in fashionable clothes, went to courses, developed a career, went out without their husbands and had male friends. She wanted to be like these women and began behaving like them. For M. This was a complete loss of simplicity. All these new values and behaviors did not exist in his native culture. He tried unsuccessfully to force his wife to behave according to the rules of his native culture. He lost plausibility because he misinterpreted the changes his wife went through as deliberate attempts to humiliate him and emasculate him. They had violent rows. In one of them he lost control and killed her. Killing a transgressing wife was tolerated in his native culture.

N. was a young unmarried man. He was dazzled by the sexual freedom of young women in his new environment. This was again loss of simplicity, because such sexual freedom was unheard of in his native culture. He took full advantage of the sexual freedom of the girls he met, but also lost plausibility and interpreted their behavior as immoral. He also lost consistency because on one hand he understood the concept of mutual consent, but on the other hand he still held the traditional tenet that women should obey men and that forcing a woman to have sex is not considered an offence. When the girl he was dating refused to have sex with him his traditional mind overcame his modern mind and he raped her. He restored his lost consistency.

How can such terrible symptoms of cultural shock be prevented? By culturally competent family therapy, in which specially trained therapists help the family, especially the men, learn how to restore emotional balance in a state of culture shock, and how to build bridges between the traditional culture and the modern culture. Identifying and Shaping Organizational Culture

“That’s not my job,” “The company doesn’t value its employees,” and “I’m not doing that, nobody cares” are all examples of statements made by employees of organizations with poor cultures. No organization wants a poor culture. A poor, insular culture is damaging. This leads to employees who do not want to take responsibility for their jobs, nor do they want to go above and beyond what they are expected to do.

Many times these issues are due to organizational and leadership issues within the company. Usually this stems from a lack of strategic leadership and/or an outdated and purposeless vision/mission statement. Leadership often dismisses the ideas that are suggested. The ideas and information that could benefit the organization from employees are not valued.

“Influencing employees to voluntarily make decisions that enhance the organization is the most important part of strategic leadership,” according to W.G. Rowe. Unfortunately managerial leaders are unable to provoke this type of influence in employees. This inevitably leads to lack of motivation. This is detrimental to an organization. When Organizational leadership/key-leaders are focused on traditional style management, they overlook the techniques needed to address the growth of the organization.

The organization also has a vision/mission statement that does not effectively communicate where the organization is headed. The organization should have a vision/mission statement that would convey to the stakeholders and customers where the organization is headed and inspire the stakeholders to come on board with the visualization. A strong, inspiring vision includes content that appeals to an organization’s shared values and ideals concerning customers, employees, and the mission of the organization. The vision is usually shaped in an open-minded, collaborative process involving key stakeholders. Another important aspect of a strategic vision is communicating that strategic vision to stakeholders. Stakeholders have to believe that the company is able to head in the direction senior management is planning to take the business and understand the changes that are ahead for the organization. Senior management must be able to get the employees on board. Without the people the vision is stifled, it will not prosper.

According to Schein, culture is defined as “a pattern of basic assumptions, invented discovered, or developed by a given group, as it learns to cope with its problems of external adaptation and internal integration, that has worked well enough to be considered valid and, therefore is to be taught to new members as the correct way to perceive, think, and feel in relation to those problems.” The shared values of people refer to culture. Mamood, Bashir & Ismat, defined culture in relation to an organization as personality is to an individual.

Organizational culture involves assumptions, beliefs, and values that are shared by members of a group or organization. Individual leaders of the organization, from top management to immediate supervisors, influence corporate culture. These leaders are responsible for setting and modeling patterns of values, beliefs, expectations, and priorities, including setting and reinforcing core assumptions about how to solve organizational problems and challenges. What is important and unimportant is defined by the organizational culture, it is the relationship that forms what occurs in an organization.

In organizational culture, the assumptions or shared assumptions are the core of corporate culture. They are non-conscious, ignored perceptions that are believed the correct way to handle problems and opportunities. Because the shared assumptions are so deeply entrenched, they can only be discovered by observing employees, analyzing their decisions, and questioning them on their actions. Organizational culture influences employee behavior, it leads employees to feel more involved in the business.

In order to determine a company’s organizational culture, workplace behavior, conversations between staff and customers, documents and emails, physical structures and settings, and corporate stories must be observed. Organizational stories and legends, rituals and ceremonies, language and physical structure, and symbols come together to make up a company’s artifacts. These artifacts offer us important information about a company’s culture. We are able to assess a company’s culture through the use of these artifacts. This offers insight into an organization and how it works. We are then able to change an unhealthy organizational culture through the knowledge of these artifacts.

Every gathering is an opportunity to reinforce and ingrain values, praise good deeds, expound on the merits of the new culture, and to refer to instances of how the new work practices and operating approaches have worked to good advantages.

Changing a problem culture is not one that will happen overnight. It takes time for a new culture to emerge and prevail. Why is it that a Democrat Congressman with previous ethics violations continues to cause conflict in America? How is it that such people rise to the top of the food chain in the leadership ranks of the Democrat Party? Isn’t inciting a riot a crime? We know a season is 90-days, or three months, but do we really need over 3-months of protests in America, isn’t the American Psyche getting protest fatigue? Is this all the left-side of the political spectrum has anymore?

Besides Al Sharpton other democrat trouble makers are calling for protests, riots, and even hinting at the need for a Civil War. In fact, Michael Moore is promoting the concept of “100-days of resistance, starting with Donald Trump’s inauguration,” while giving an interview for Salon (dot) com. Didn’t we just get over the BLM – Black Lives Matter protests and riots partially paid for by political operative Billionaire George Soros? Do we really need any more civil unrest in America?

The Salon story stated; “He [Michael Moore] will start by attending the women’s march, which he described as a ‘bold message’ to remind the president-elect that women’s rights are human rights.” Wait, am I missing something here? Wasn’t it Barack Obama who bowed to the King of Saud in Saudi Arabia and gave a speech in Cairo, for which he received a Nobel Peace Prize, about what a great way of life Islam is, a culture that puts women in the back seat, unless there are land minds and then they walk in front of the men. The left suddenly, and in their infinite hypocrisy, finds a soft spot in their hearts for women?

And, yes, their candidate was defeated, not because she was a woman, rather due to personal character flaws which have followed her, her entire life. The right doesn’t have anything against women, the right has something against lies, hypocrisy, fake economic numbers, political correctness, and the disruptors of society busy looting, rioting and burning out store fronts.

Look, here is the thing, we are finally retiring a Community Protest Organizer turn President, who sent race-relations in America back 40-years and we hardly need any more of this nonsense. The left lost this election, not due to the Russians hacking the DNC revealing their true colors, but because the left, had left the middle class high-and-dry with bad policies one-after-another. Wasn’t it Obama himself that told the American People, “elections have consequences” as he rammed his socialist policies down our throats? Now that the left didn’t get their way – they want to riot and protest?

One of Donald Trump’s campaign promises was that he was going to bring “Law and order back to America” and in part, the Trump Campaign won on that message, yet the left wants to continue this misbehavior, protests and criminal behavior – and yes, it is a Class-C Felony to incite a riot.
